FOR UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS:

Here's how to avoid getting deported and how to know your rights.

Step 1: Apply for "ID NYC"
-This is FREE legitimate identification that you can use whenever someone asks you to present your identification. They will NOT ASK FOR IMMIGRATION STATUS. TO GET IT: You can call 311 or call 212-788-7654 or visit www1.nyc.gov/site/idnyc/index.page.

Step 2: If you are in trouble and need help, GET A FREE IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY.
- VISIT THE BROOKLYN DEFENDERS OR BRONX DEFENDERS. They offer FREE attorneys who will defend you and help you fight your case against deportation. You can call the BROOKLYN DEFENDERS at: (718) 254-0700 or visit them at bds.org/.
-Another option is to call 311 and ask for an attorney.

Step 3: UPDATE YOUR EMERGENCY CONTACT INFO for your children enrolled in public school.
-If something happens and you are detained, make plans for your relatives or friends to take care of your kids. Schools will NEVER ask for immigration status.

Step 4: BEWARE OF SCAMS!
-Many people are posing as ICE officials and trying to exploit immigrants for money. Always ask people to present their ID and if they do not have an official ID, call the police on them.
